Things to Do in Jaipur: FAQs

Why should I visit Jaipur?

As the vibrant capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur has history, culture, and unique experiences on every corner. From impressive forts and palaces to lively markets and delicious Rajasthani food, Jaipur stands out as a must-visit destination in India. With only one full day in the Pink City, you can visit Jaipur’s iconic landmarks that will immerse you into Indian architecture, culture, and history. Plus, it’s in close proximity to north India’s other standout destinations including Delhi, Agra (the Taj Mahal), Pushkar, Ranthambore, and Jodhpur, making it an easy addition to your trip.

How to get to Jaipur?

As the capital of India’s northern state of Rajasthan, Jaipur is well-connected to other major cities in India. Jaipur has an airport with short one-hour flights from many places, including Delhi and Udaipur. You can also reach Jaipur by train and bus from all nearby cities, but keep in mind that public transportation in India is usually chaotic, crowded, and takes a while. I recommend flying for longer distances or hiring a private transfer for closer distances. This also saves you the staring and picture-taking that happens when you’re one of the only non-locals using public transportation.

How to book the best hotels in Jaipur?

The best booking platform for finding and reserving great hotels in India is Agoda. It’s owned by the same company as Booking.com but is based in Asia, making it great for finding any hotels you need. If you’re a backpacker staying in hostels, then Hostelworld is consistently the best hostel booking platform worldwide, and India is no exception. Book your Jaipur accommodation on Agoda today:

Don’t want to search for the best option, or just don’t have time? That’s what I’m here for! As a professional travel advisor, I’ve vetted or personally stayed at the suggested properties below.

Where to stay in Jaipur?

The best place to stay in Jaipur is in the old city. This is the heart of the city, close to major attractions and surrounded by the beautiful buildings that give it the nickname of the “Pink City”. You’ll be surrounded by lively markets, delicious restaurants, and gorgeous architecture while being in a convenient location.

$$$: Samode Haveli Hotel

$$: All Seasons Homestay

$: Madpackers Jaipur

How to book the best activities and excursions in Jaipur?

The best activity and excursion booking platforms for India are Klook and GetYourGuide. Both websites have thousands of trustworthy travel experiences with verified user reviews. I use Klook and GetYourGuide to book almost all my excursions in Asia, and you’ll find links throughout the article to great experiences I’ve personally vetted or experienced myself.

How to get around Jaipur?

Getting around Jaipur is very easy via tuk tuk, which are available on every corner for affordable prices. Jaipur is spread out, so you won’t be able to walk to its main attractions. Hiring a tuk tuk driver for the day is a great way to conveniently and affordably get around.

How long to spend in Jaipur?

One full day is enough to see the historic and cultural highlights of Jaipur, but you could split the activities into two days if you want to take it slow. Make sure to stay at least two nights so you have a full day at minimum to enjoy the best things to do in Jaipur.

When to visit Jaipur?

The best time to visit Jaipur is in the winter, from November to March. This is when the weather is cool and pleasant, making Jaipur’s many outdoor attractions significantly more enjoyable. Jaipur can get above 45°C/113°F in the summer (April to June) and the monsoon season comes from July to September, so try to avoid traveling in those months.

Best Things to Do in Jaipur

Morning

Amber Fort

The beautiful Amber Fort was built in the 16th century and still stands as one of the best places in India to see stunning architecture and rich history. Set on a hill overlooking Jaipur, the magnificent fort consists of palaces, halls, courtyards, gardens, and more. Walking through the sandstone and marble structures is like walking through history. Because of this, I highly recommend hiring a local guide so you can learn all about this fascinating and beautiful place. It will take a couple of hours to explore, and I recommend showing up when it opens as it gets very crowded.

Ethical Tourist Tip: Please don’t ride elephants at Amber Fort. You’ll see many people doing it, but it isn’t good for the elephants.

Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is a beautiful palace set in the middle of a lake. You can’t visit it, but you can stop by on the way back to central Jaipur from Amber Fort. It’s on the way and only takes a few minutes to hop out and take a photo.

Photography Tip: The palace will be backlit in the morning, so if you really care about getting a good shot, come back in the late afternoon!

Midday

Try Rajasthani dishes for lunch

Whenever you get hungry for lunch, you’re in for a treat. Rajasthani food is so flavorful and delicious, and you’re in one of the best places to try it! My favorite options for trying new Indian foods are by going to a buffet or ordering a thali. Thali is a platter of various dishes including curries, vegetables, breads, rice, and dessert. It’s a great way to sample lots of different dishes at once, and often comes in vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

Overwhelmed planning your trip to India and want expert help?

As an Asia travel expert, I help travelers design personalized India itineraries that match their travel style, comfort level, pace, budget, and more. Skip the overwhelm and let’s build a custom journey you’ll never forget.

Start planning your custom India trip today!

Hawa Mahal

The next few midday attractions are very close to each other, so you can switch around the order as you please. Hawa Mahal is a very famous and Instagrammable palace known as the “Palace of Winds”. It was built in 1799 and stands as a representative landmark of Jaipur because of its pink sandstone exterior. You can’t go inside, but it’s a beautiful building that’s quick and easy to stop by for a few photos.

Jantar Mantar

If you’re interested in astrology or astronomy, Jantar Mantar will be a highlight of your time in Jaipur. Home to the world’s largest stone sundial and 19 other fixed instruments, it’s a fascinating place to learn about astronomical observation. If you visit without a guide, you’ll have no idea what you’re looking at, so I strongly recommend hiring one to tell you all about the instruments and horoscopes.

My horoscope, libra!

City Palace

Another great example of Rajasthani and Mughal art and architecture, the City Palace is an impressive complex of courtyards, buildings, and gardens. This royal residence is a great place to learn about the history of Jaipur’s royals while seeing a unique blend of architectural styles.

Afternoon

Bapu Bazaar

Bapu Bazaar is the main shopping street in Jaipur and is a great place to experience a local market. You can shop for spices, textiles, clothing, souvenirs, and more for affordable prices. It’s a buzzing place to buy almost anything you could want. For great quality and affordable prices on spices and tea ($1 per pack of spices), check out the spice shop called Tulsidas Jindaram.

Sari shop

Evening

Eat dinner on a rooftop

Mealtimes are always my favorite time in India because it’s an excuse to try more incredible curries (one of my favorite foods). If you want to get a great view of the city and its many surrounding forts lit up at night, having dinner on a rooftop elevates (literally) your dining experience.

Jaipur is a city that leaves a lasting impression, even if you only have one day to explore. With these top things to do in Jaipur, you’re sure to make the most of your time in the Pink City. From exploring royal palaces and astronomical observatories to trying regional foods and shopping at bustling markets, you’ve seen why Jaipur is so special to many travelers.

How about exploring Jodhpur, the Blue City, or spotting wild tigers in Ranthambore National Park next? Read more about seeing tigers in India with Beyond Both Shores’ guide to a Ranthambore Tiger Safari, which was one of my favorite experiences on my India trip.

thinking about solo traveling in new zealand? here thinking about solo traveling in new zealand? here are 5 things you need to know before you go 🇳🇿✨

1️⃣ it’s one of the safest and easiest countries to travel solo, making it perfect for first-timers and solo travelers still building their confidence
2️⃣ it’s absolutely jaw-dropping… but very spread out, so logistics matter. if you have 2 weeks or less, I recommend focusing only on the south island
3️⃣ it’s on the more expensive side, so most solo travelers stay in hostels and cook most of their meals. hiking is a very popular low-cost activity, but it’s no joke - no get your steps in before your trip!
4️⃣ speaking of hiking, solo hiking safety is important to think about. always let someone know your plans (even if it’s the front desk worker at your hostel) like where you’re going, when you expect to be back, and how to reach you. pay very close attention to the weather (it can change in an instant) and ask locals if it’s safe to hike that day. many hostels will organize group hiking trips, so take advantage of those
5️⃣ if you never want to worry about being alone or getting around, I highly recommend doing the kiwi experience, a hop-on, hop-off bus that helps you make friends & see all the highlights without driving. or, if you’d prefer to not lift a finger, join a group trip! you don’t have to explore new zealand completely on your own, even as a solo traveler

🎒 if you want to build your own solo new zealand adventure, whether it’s with a group or a supported custom itinerary, I’d love to help. I specialize in custom trips + solo travel planning, so send me a message or hit the link in bio to get started! 💌

2 weeks in new zealand’s south island is the kin 2 weeks in new zealand’s south island is the kind of trip you’ll remember forever 💖

I did this exact itinerary solo with the @kiwiexperience south & sound pass, and it was honestly one of the easiest and most fun ways to explore, especially if you’re traveling alone. the scenery? unmatched. the people? instant friends. the vibes? immaculate.

this itinerary works for anyone, but if you’re thinking about making it happen on your own, consider this your sign to stop waiting for travel companions and do it solo 🗺️
