Whether you want laid-back beach days, thrilling scuba dives, or jungle hikes, there’s an island for you. But with over 1,400 islands, how can you possibly decide which ones to visit? Why should I visit the Thai islands?
If you want an escape to paradise full of beautiful beaches, clear waters, delicious food, friendly locals, and stunning sunsets, then the Thai islands are for you. Whether you want to explore the underwater world and go on hikes or chill at the beach and drink from a coconut, you can have as adventurous or relaxing of a trip as you’d like. Each Thai island has its own activities, vibes, and appeal, so you won’t struggle to find the best tropical escape for you. However, with so many amazing islands in the country, this list of the best islands in Thailand will help narrow it down.
When is the best time of year to visit the Thai islands?
Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta are located in the Andaman Sea, so they have the same rainy season, while Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand has a different rainy season. The best time to visit Koh Lipe and Koh Tao is November to April, when it’s dry and there are calm seas. The best time to visit Koh Lanta is also when it’s dry season with calm seas, which is March to September. So, the optimal time to visit all three is in March to optimize the best weather and sea conditions.
Are the Thai islands crowded?
Some of the Thai islands are crowded, with places like Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, and Krabi struggling with overtourism. That’s why those places didn’t make the cut to be on this list. The three islands that I consider to be the best are so good partially because they aren’t overrun with tourists. Yes, there are other tourists, but you won’t feel the effects of mass tourism.
Crowds also depend on what time of year you visit and where you go. The islands will always be more crowded during the high season (November to April) when the weather is the nicest. The main beaches will also always be more crowded than the smaller beaches. If you’re averse to crowds like me, I encourage you to explore off the beaten path.
What’s the best Thai island itinerary?
To visit the best islands in Thailand, either start north and make your way south or vice versa. Koh Tao is the northernmost island on this list, while Koh Lipe is the southernmost. So, go from Koh Lipe to Koh Lanta to Koh Tao, or vice versa. I recommend spending at least three days on each island for a good mix of relaxing and exploring.
Are the Thai islands good for solo travelers?
Yes, the Thai islands are safe, budget-friendly, and welcoming, making them great solo travel destinations. Many solo travelers go to the Thai islands, especially Koh Tao, meaning you won’t struggle to find good hostels and meet other people. Always be aware of your surroundings and never tell anyone you’re alone, as you should do anywhere you solo travel, but you should have a great experience.

Best Islands in Thailand: Koh Lipe
Also known as the “Maldives of Thailand” due to its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, Koh Lipe is no doubt one of the best islands in Thailand. Located in the Andaman Sea at Thailand’s southern tip, this tiny island is home to some of the country’s best beaches and a thriving underwater world. Whether you like to relax on the white sand beaches or go for an underwater adventure, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Koh Lipe.
While it’s one of the farthest islands south, it’s more than worth the trip to uncover this slice of paradise. The busier islands further north, such as Koh Phi Phi and Phuket, don’t have the same quality of beaches. The water in Koh Lipe is the clearest and bluest you’ll see in Thailand, and the beaches are some of the most pristine.

Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach are the best places to stay, both within walking distance of each other and Koh Lipe Walking Street. Sunrise Beach is more relaxed because Pattaya Beach is where the pier is. If you want to prioritize convenience, stay at Pattaya Beach, but if you want to prioritize a calmer beach, stay at Sunrise Beach.

- From Bangkok: Fly to Hat Yai Airport (1.5 hours), take a minivan or taxi to Pakse Pier in Pak Bara (2 hours), then take a speedboat to Koh Lipe (1.5–2 hours)
- From Krabi/Ao Nang: Take a minivan to Pak Bara Pier (4–5 hours), then take a speedboat to Koh Lipe (1.5-2 hours)
- From Phuket (November to April only): Take a ferry or speedboat via Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, and other islands (6–8 hours total)

Best Islands in Thailand: Koh Lanta
With its laid-back atmosphere and uncrowded beaches, Koh Lanta is the perfect island in Thailand for those wanting to unwind away from the crowds. Many visitors skip Koh Lanta for nearby Koh Phi Phi and Krabi, but I found it considerably more enjoyable to get away from mass tourism and enjoy unspoiled beaches that I almost had to myself. Koh Lanta is my personal favorite island in Thailand for its relaxed vibes, charming Old Town, pristine beaches, and variety of activities. Whether you’re exploring remote beaches on a scooter, kayaking to sea caves, learning how to cook Thai food, or hiking through the jungle, you’ll be as busy or as relaxed as you want in Koh Lanta.
Word of warning: Koh Lanta does not have the turquoise blue water that you might be expecting. The sand in Koh Lanta is yellow instead of white, so while the water is clear, it doesn’t have that crystal-clear, bright blue appearance like the water in Koh Lipe and Koh Tao. The beaches in Koh Lanta were my favorite regardless, but I’m giving a heads-up because some people are disappointed by this.

Best Islands in Thailand: Koh Tao
Known for its scuba diving scene, stunning beaches, and relaxed atmosphere, Koh Tao is a must-visit island in Thailand. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, on the opposite side of the country from Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe, Koh Tao rose to travel fame because of its thriving marine life. Scuba divers from across the world come to Koh Tao to start or continue their education because it’s one of the cheapest places in the world to get scuba certifications. Even if you aren’t a diver, you’ll enjoy the laid-back island vibes, white sand beaches, and hikes to stunning viewpoints.
Koh Tao is one of the best islands in Thailand for solo travelers and backpackers with tons of hostels and events, making it easy to meet other people. However, Koh Tao also has many families and couples visit, so there are plenty of options no matter your budget and style of travel.
Note about safety in Koh Tao: Koh Tao has a reputation for being unsafe due to some tragic incidents that have happened there over the years. However, it’s as safe as anywhere else in Thailand as long as you take precautions and are aware of your surroundings. Like anywhere else, don’t wander off alone at night or go off with strangers. I never felt unsafe in Koh Tao while taking the standard safety precautions I take everywhere I go.
